First goes first: Frank and Cary, tell us a bit about yourself please.
Frank: My name is Frank, I'm 56 years young
The best thing that happend in the last 4 months is that I went on early retirement
I like to do photomanipulation for the fun of it, and I'm an amateur in taking photographs, I got very interested in birds
. I love the challenge to get wonderful pictures when they are flying
Cary: I'm Cary and since I discovered the "manip world" making manips is my biggest hobby. Beside that I also like reading novels and spiritual books.
We live in Belgium in a small town on the countryside, we love the peace and quiet and the overall green here. We have 2 daughters, 1 son, and 4 grandchildren. We enjoy taking walks in the forest, park, the city, shopping,...
You form a true photomanipulation couple. In what ways do you help each other improving in this kind of art?
Frank: I gave her a push to what she does for the moment, but she improved herself to the manips she does know.
She does hair better than me, so she gives me tips about that.
But if we do a collab we work exellent together and say what we think about the other one's work.
Cary: The moment I started Frank already made photomanips, so he taught me
, and now, seeing other deviations on DA, I often look at the stock people use, like textures etc, and try this out.
This way we can give each other advice, by example for the collab we made with the statue, Frank taught me how to "crack and peel", he made some, I made some, on a collab we work toghether and do everything 50-50.
How would you both describe your own style?
Frank: I really don't have a style of my own, I try it all so I can learn a lot of different things.
But the thing I love to do is Horror
, but I dont do that because all the people I know can't believe I love that
Cary: I try to make manips in different styles, I love making surreal (an art that I admire a lot), but I guess, if I should pic one style, I think the fairytaile-style would fit best, you know, everything with wings.
What do you like most about your partner's photomanipulations and wich are her/his best skills?
Frank: I love the way she uses the texture blending, and her blending things in, so you get the feeling it belongs there.
And I find she does the hair very beautiful!!
Cary: No need to say I love all his works
, I love it when he makes something with special effects, like cracks and peels, transforming something into ice, and especially his "ren" works (the manipulated paintings)
How do you both give your works such great foggy, misty effects?
Cary: I work a lot with textures, to give a foggy misty effect I often give the texture a "gaussian blur" and erase certain parts on low opacity. Or sometimes I use smoke or mist brushes, and play with "blur" too then.
What are good ways to add a light focuss to a background or subject?
Frank: Cavami likes to play with textures, I like to experiment with color
and blending modes.
Cary: I make a "light beam", or I use a texture with a light spot in, and play with colors and blending modes to give a special effect.
What advice would you give to any newcomers in the photomanipulation arts?
Frank: For me the most important thing is Fun!!, and practice
Cary: First of all : enjoy and have fun making manips, and be happy with every improvement you make, it's so much fun!!
And now of course a feature for everybody to enjoy:
Thank you both so much for this great interview. Keep brighten up my day with your wonderful creations!! <3
