A new fairytale?by XilaPhoenixArt

Digital Art / Mixed Media / Fantasy©2012-2014 XilaPhoenixArt
After playing with photomanipulation and struggling hard with digital painting, I decided to take an in between step. I need to learn so much about anatomy, shading, lighting and so on. So why not trying out mixed media? I used one beautiful stock and painted over heavily to learn more about all the aspects. I was working hard on color choices, lighting and shadows. Then the next challenge was the background. For this I wanted to make my very first move on speedpainting. Oh my goodie, that opened a whole world for me! So I've been mixing multiple techniques in this one for this goal: to learn more and improve my digital skills. I hope you can see the progression I make too.
If you have advice for me, please let me know, so I can take your words with me upto my next work. Thanks!

A big thanks to the stock provider:

This is amazing! I can see the improvement even in the short(ish) time I've been watching you! (On dA... hehe.) This is really lovely.

I, quite personally, love to see mixed media works, as they tend to be more helpful towards teh artist. I do, of course, have a few words of advice.

Firstly, I'd like to bring up the shadows. For the most part the light source is very straight forward and similar, however, I noticed a few incongruities. For example, the shadow of her arm is different from that of the hair. While it might look similar (and somewhat correct- but I'm such a lighting freak that it's annoying), it is actually not.
Judging by the light in the background, light should be hitting her face on, thus making her shadow fall asymmetrically to the viewer. Therefore, the shadows on the hair should technically be falling onto her neck (from the right locks- pardon me, not with it tonight), and the locks on the left casting a shadow on her dress.
The shadow on her arm is much more correct. It faces the reader. However, it is directly behind her arm. This actually does not go along with the lighting. It should technically be falling towards the left of her arm. However, it is still very good.
From what I can see, the only other lighting issue (which is barely noticeable at all) is her dress. (I love the blue color, by the way.) The lighting on the dress if coming from behind the viewer, thus casting a different shadow. Either something is going on that I don't know about, or her dress is glowing. ;)

Either way, this is an absolutely lovely piece. Lighting is something that all artists battle constantly.

I'm going to say that my favorite part of this manipulation is her hair. I love the way that you draw your hair- it looks almost so painted that it must be real! :)

Anyway, here's your rating explanation.

Vision: 5 Stars
Looking to improve your skills? Why of course! Best vision I've heard of all day.

Originality: 3.5 Stars
I can't say much for originality- this is a pretty common idea... but the hair! And the beads on the dress (and her face)! I loves.

Technique: 4 Stars
Due to your battle with lighting, I'm sad to say that I'm not giving 5 stars. But hey, I really love your speed painting. :P

Impact: 5 Stars
This was the first thing that caught my eye when I opened my dA mailbox today! I've got to say that it catches the eye. :)

Hope this helps you in the future! :)
